Some people use the word “riff” and “run” interchangeably, including me! But if you want to make a distinction between the two, most people agree that a riff is a musical idea, either improvised or planned. Guitarists, sax players, and vocalists all riff. A run is a melodic embellishment based off of a scale. Obviously, there can be overlap! But for the sake of clarity, this video will focus on runs using the major scale and the pentatonic scale.
